Trading will resume on Monday, 5 October 2026. In the previous trading session on Thursday, 1 October, the Nifty 50 declined 0.88% to close at 22,421.95, while the Sensex fell 0.79% to 71,909.70. The Nifty continued its weak trend and recorded its eighth consecutive weekly decline. With markets closed today, traders and investors can use the holiday to review the week’s market performance and understand the key factors that could influence trading when the exchanges reopen on Monday. Stock Market Snapshot (Last Session: 1 October 2026) Index Close Change % Change Nifty 50 22,421.95 -198.50 -0.88% Sensex 71,909.70 -570.59 -0.79% Nifty Bank 54,450.75 -182.30 -0.33% Nifty IT 28,304.70 +599.90 +2.17% Nifty Auto 25,384.95 -909.00 -3.46% What Moved the Market This Week? Foreign Institutional Selling Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of approximately ₹9,484 crore on 1 October. Domestic institutional investors, meanwhile, were net buyers of around ₹10,042 crore.Domestic institutional buying provided some support to the market, but continued foreign selling remained an important factor behind the broader weakness. Crude Oil and Bond Yields Brent crude was trading near $103 a barrel, while US bond yields moved higher following the previous US trading session. Higher crude prices can be significant for the Indian economy because of its dependence on imported oil. A sustained rise in crude prices can influence inflation expectations, the rupee and corporate margins. Bond yields are another factor traders monitor because changes in global yields can affect capital flows and overall market sentiment. Eighth Consecutive Weekly Fall The Nifty 50 ended another week in negative territory, extending its losing streak to eight consecutive weeks. The extended decline highlights continued selling pressure in the market. However, a prolonged losing streak by itself does not indicate when the trend will reverse. For traders learning technical analysis, this is also an example of why market trends should be studied through price action, support and resistance levels, volume and other indicators rather than through a single market statistic.   Key Market Developments   IT Stocks Rise Despite Broader Market Weakness The Nifty IT index gained 2.17% on 1 October. Mphasis, Coforge and Infosys were among the notable gainers in the sector. The sector’s positive performance stood out against the broader market decline. However, a single-day rise does not by itself establish a change in the longer-term trend. Auto Stocks Decline The Nifty Auto index fell 3.46% during the session. Monthly sales numbers weighed on some auto stocks, contributing to the sector’s weakness. Traders generally monitor monthly sales data alongside broader demand trends, company performance and market sentiment. Kotak Mahindra Bank Gains After CEO Appointment Kotak Mahindra Bank gained more than 3% during the session after Anup Kumar Saha was named Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The stock’s movement showed how company-specific developments can influence individual stocks even when the broader market is under pressure. Hospital Stocks Remain Under Pressure Hospital stocks were among the weaker areas of the market amid concerns related to drug-pricing regulation. Sector-specific regulatory developments can affect investor expectations and therefore remain important factors for traders following individual industries. Traders may monitor several factors when the market reopens. Global Market Cues Crude oil prices and US bond yields could influence market sentiment after the holiday break. Any significant movement in global markets during the closure could also be reflected in domestic trading. FII and DII Activity Foreign and domestic institutional flows will remain important indicators. Traders can monitor whether foreign selling continues and whether domestic institutional buying provides support. Interest Rate Expectations Interest-rate expectations are another factor that can influence equities, bonds and currency markets. Market participants should distinguish between individual institutional views and official policy decisions. Corporate Actions and Events Traders should also check the upcoming corporate-action calendar before taking positions. Relevant events scheduled around 5 October include an ex-dividend date and several IPO closing dates. Trading Concept: Understanding Market Breadth Market breadth measures the number of stocks that are advancing compared with the number of stocks that are declining. On 1 October, the NSE recorded approximately 729 advancing stocks against 2,556 declining stocks. This indicates that market weakness was broad rather than being limited to a small number of large stocks. For traders, breadth can provide additional context when analysing a market move. It is generally considered alongside price action, trading volume and major index levels rather than being used as a standalone indicator. Stock Market Today: Nifty Near 22,555 as Autos Drag, Kotak Bank and IT Gain

Stock Market Today: Nifty Near 22,555 as Autos Drag, Kotak Bank and IT Gain Updated on:October 1, 2026 Posted By: Nitin Krishan Indian markets opened October 2026 on a weak note. At 10:50 AM IST, Nifty 50 fell 0.29% to 22,555 and Sensex slipped 0.08% to 72,423. Auto stocks declined 3.2%, while IT and Bank gained 1.8% and 0.6%, respectively. FIIs sold ₹10,148 crore, while DIIs bought ₹11,272 crore on September 30. Indian markets began the October series under pressure on 1 October 2026. The headline indices were only slightly lower, but the sector picture was sharply split. Autos were the weakest pocket, while IT and banks held up the index. Foreign selling and global factors such as oil and US yields remain in the background. For learners, today shows how a few sectors can support an index while most stocks fall. Figures are intraday as of about 10:50 AM IST and will change through the session. Market Snapshot Index Level (10:50 AM) Change % Change Nifty 50 22,555.05 -65.40 -0.29% Sensex 72,423.37 -56.82 -0.08% Bank Nifty 54,956.90 +323.85 +0.59% Nifty IT 28,215.60 +510.80 +1.84% Nifty Auto 25,445.35 -848.60 -3.23% Previous closes (30 September): Nifty 22,620.45, Sensex 72,480.29, Bank Nifty 54,633.05. What Moved the Market Today? 01. Sector divergence Nifty IT gained about 1.8% while Nifty Auto fell about 3.2%. Moneycontrol’s sector data showed the automotive group down about 2.5% by market cap and IT up about 2.2%. These opposite moves explain why the Nifty and Sensex look almost flat. 02. Weak breadth The NSE advance-decline count was about 1,114 advances to 1,946 declines. More stocks were falling than rising, even though the index loss was small. 03. Continued foreign selling and global pressures Geojit’s V K Vijayakumar said FIIs sold about Rs 20,128 crore of equities over the previous two sessions. He linked this to the US 10-year bond yield rising to 5.3% and said a decline in crude could help sentiment turn. These are his views, not confirmed causes of today’s moves. Higher oil raises India’s import bill, and higher yields can make equities less attractive compared with bonds, which is why traders track both. 04. Rate-hike expectations. Moneycontrol’s Daily Voice interviews carry two views: Valtrust’s Rahul Bhutoria expects an RBI stance shift in October and a rate hike in December, and Shriram Life’s CIO expects 50 bps of hikes by December. These are individual opinions, not RBI announcements. Key Market Developments Autos lead the decline Bajaj Auto was among the biggest Nifty losers, falling about 7% on strong volumes earlier in the session. Mahindra & Mahindra slipped about 3% and touched a 52-week low of Rs 2,852.70 after its September sales update. M&M’s total sales rose 15% year-on-year, but tractor sales fell 21% and exports declined 7%. SML Mahindra also fell. Healthy headline sales do not always protect a share price, because traders also look at which segments are slowing. The sources do not explain why Bajaj Auto fell so sharply, so that move is best treated as unexplained. IT rebounds Nifty IT gained about 1.8%, with MphasiS up about 4.3% and Coforge up about 3.5%. A separate Moneycontrol report noted that IT growth faces pricing pressure from AI in Q2 FY27, and a Daily Voice interview described IT as a contrarian bet. A contrarian bet means a sector that is out of favour but could attract buyers. Follow-through into the close is worth watching. Kotak Mahindra Bank jumps on leadership news Kotak Mahindra Bank gained over 3% after reports that Anup Kumar Saha was named its new MD & CEO. It topped the most-active F&O list by traded value, at roughly Rs 2,150 crore. A move on high turnover generally carries more weight than the same move on thin volume. The appointment should be confirmed through the bank’s exchange filing. Bank Nifty’s gain was concentrated in a few names: Moneycontrol’s sector data showed banking and financial services market cap up only about 0.19%. Hospital stocks stay weak Moneycontrol reported that hospital stocks extended losses as drug-pricing regulation concerns lingered, with Apollo Hospitals and Max Healthcare among the top Nifty losers. This is a policy-driven move rather than a market-wide one. Manufacturing PMI improves The HSBC/S&P Global India Manufacturing PMI for September came in at 55.1, up from 52.8 in August. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. Primary market stays active Moneyview listed at a 64% premium on BSE, and A-One Steels listed at about a 14% premium. Black Opal Consultants’ IPO closes today. Listing gains are not guaranteed for any IPO. On 30 September, DII buying exceeded FII selling by about Rs 1,123 crore. Domestic buying has absorbed a large part of the foreign selling, which may be one reason the indices have fallen less sharply than the flows alone suggest. Flows can reverse quickly and do not predict the next move. Verify figures on the NSE and SEBI data pages. What Traders Should Watch Next FII flows and US yields whether foreign selling slows after two heavy sessions. Crude oil Brent’s direction, which analysts at Axis Capital say faces a shrinking inventory cushion of about 6–9 months. RBI commentary any signal on a stance shift.
